If you’re experiencing dental pain, please contact us right away.
Some people think that if they ignore the problem it will go away. That may be true sometimes, but more often than not, a toothache will get worse before it gets better. Even if it goes completely away for awhile, it will usually return with a vengeance. The best thing to do is to deal with the source of the problem as soon as you are aware of it.
Important symptoms to be aware of include extreme swelling, difficulty breathing, difficulty swallowing, or pain around the eye. (Pain around the ear is more common, and though uncomfortable and requiring immediate attention, is usually something to be a little less worried about .) If you have any of these symptoms, seek help IMMEDIATELY. If you cannot reach our office ASAP, contact an oral maxillofacial surgeon, call 911, visit an emergency room. Dental infections can be extremely dangerous and even life threatening. An uncontrolled dental infection can result in, among other things, a permanent paresthesia (loss of feeling) in an area, blindness, suffocation, and generalized infection.
Even if you don’t have a very bad pain or any of the symptoms described above, you should see a dentist immediately. Why? Dental problems are always best dealt with at the earliest possible time. Always. Treatment options tend to be more extensive and costly the longer you wait. And then there’s some good news: Many times treatment for minor to moderate aches can be a lot less extensive than you think. Often at the office of The Gentle Dentist, we’ve solved toothaches by simply painting fluoride over a tooth. That’s right! Just remineralizing a tooth can sometimes ease or eradicate pain. On other occasions a simple filling might solve the problem.
So, hope for the best. But whatever you do, don’t ignore it.
